Cross Matching

Cross-matching is a test done before a blood transfusion to determine if the donor's blood is compatible with the blood of an intended recipient. It is a kind of demonstration of what will happen if the particular unit of red cells is transfused to the patient. Cross Matching takes 45 minutes to 1 hour. Red cell units without cross matching can be given in dire emergency in certain situations. Such decisions are taken by the treating doctors in conjunction with the blood bank.

It's essentially a trial transfusion done in blood bank laboratory to see exactly how patient’s blood will react with donor blood. OR What will happen after transfusing the unit of red cells to the patient, is seen in the blood bank laboratory by performing a cross matching test. Only if this cross matching test shows compatible results, then the red cell unit is issued to the patient. However, few patients might face minor adverse effects of transfusion of blood components. These can occur in spite of compatibility testing being done correctly.

Only giving same group red cells is not sufficiently safe. They should be necessarily crossmatch compatible. Patient’s blood is mixed with donor’s blood and incubated at 37 degrees C to simulate patient’s body conditions. Some reagents are used in this procedure.
